Introduction

All will agree that there is no asset more important than our families and our homes, yet most of us do so little to protect them from the dangers that pose the most serious threats to their safety. One such danger is fire. In 2007, fire was the cause of 2,895 deaths and $7.5 billion in damages. Much of this tragedy could have been easily avoided had many of the homeowners taken some simple precautions towards protecting themselves and their families from the dangers of fire.

Many have come to realize this and, as a result, smoke detectors have become standard in most homes. While smoke detectors will certainly save people's lives, they do nothing towards saving their homes. In order to save homes, a little more is required. The installation of residential sprinkler systems can be that "little more" that homeowners require to effectively protect both their homes and families.

Benefits & Costs

The benefit of a residential sprinkler system is obvious. Once activated, they attack the fire instead of just warning residents about it. While smoke detectors are certainly a necessity when discussing protecting one's home from fire, just detecting a fire still leaves both the home and its residents exposed and any one of a number of things could go wrong. Residents might not hear it for one. Regarding the elderly, a smoke detector may go off but they still may not be able to evacuate the premises quickly enough to escape danger. A residential sprinkler system can make the difference between life and death; between a home and an insurance claim.

Residential sprinkler systems undergone significant development over the course of the past couple of years. Current systems are designed using small plastic pipes which drives down the costs and alleviates some of the more invasive installation process for already-built homes. The industry has also come to understand that their is no written law declaring that sprinklers must be ugly little metal ceiling attachments. Sprinklers now come in a wide variety of different shapes, sizes and designs.

Many people are under the misconception that when a residential sprinkler system is activated by fire that all of the sprinklers are set off. Such a system would cause unnecessary water damage to the home. With today's residential sprinkler systems, only the sprinkler(s) closest to the fire will are activate. In this way, the fire is attacked and peripheral water damage is reduced significantly. It is important to remember that any potential water damage incurred by a sprinkler is far less than that of the potential smoke and fire damage to the property had their not been a residential sprinkler system or even the water damage caused if a fire hose is used to put the fire out.

Residential sprinkler systems are an easy to install and cost-effective way for homeowners to offer maximum protection for their homes and their loved ones.
