Are fire sprinkler systems affective against smoke? E-mail

The majority of deaths from fires are actually caused by a by-product of fire, smoke. Smoke inhalation is the main cause of deaths in property fires. While fire sprinklers do not filter smoke from the air, they will, at the very least, minimize the amount of smoke that is produced by the fire.

In the unfortunate event that a fire breaks out in a property, the fire sprinkler system is activated. Each sprinkler head is individually activated and will douse it’s immediate area in between 13 and 18 gallons of water. In most fires, only one or two sprinkler heads are activated and are generally enough to put out the fire or, at the minimum, suppress it. With a the fire extinguished, no additional smoke or fumes are produced. When the fire is suppressed, simply less smoke is produced allowing people to escape suffering only a minimum of smoke inhalation.
