What is the safety record for buildings with sprinkler systems vs. those without? E-mail

With the exception of loss of life due to explosion and those firefighters that lose their lives during the fighting of fires, there is no record of multiple deaths in a building that was fully equipped with a system of sprinklers due to either fire or smoke inhalation. It is also important to mention that loss of life in buildings fitted with sprinkler systems were generally due to the fact that the victim, their clothes or their surroundings were somehow the source of the fire.

A study undertaken between the years 1971 and 1975 by the National fire Protection Association concluded that their were 20 lives lost annually in the United States due to fire in buildings fitted with sprinkler systems as opposed to an astronomic 4,000 lives lost annually due to fires in buildings that were not fitted with sprinkler systems. It was estimated that 68% of loss of life in protected buildings were due to explosion and some 18% were due to the fact that the source of the fire was in an unprotected part of the building.
